Theme: Hacking Cars

A Reading Greek Night – rLab joint event exploring the potential for modifying cars of all sorts.

8:00pm Welcome and Introductions

8:05pm Malcolm Napier will outline his interest in car hacking, to set the scene for two presentations that explore a very wide range of car hacking possibilities.

8:15pm Open Motor Works  (Jason Beever)

Open Motor Works exists in in Hungerford, West Berkshire to provide the space, equipment and/or knowledge to enable individuals to undertake car restoration or performance build projects, which they couldn’t do otherwise – because they don’t have the space, equipment or knowledge to do so. 

They offer professional workshop level facilities and a community of like-minded people to help serious car enthusiasts realise their car project aspirations.

Jason Beever, from Open Motor Works will describe the background to Open Motor Works, their vision and some of the projects that have been undertaken.”

9:15pm Back to the Future 1970s Style 

“Overview of the journey taking the best of modern automotive technology and retrofitting it all into a car from the same era as the Intel 4004. Starting with a 1974 Ford Escort Mk1 with minimal functionality and bolting on electronic fuel injection, turbochargers, digital instrument clusters, CAN-bus networks, Raspberry Pis and ultimately the ‘cloud’. Touching on multiple engineering disciplines; automotive engineering, EE, CS, cyber security, and product design. All In the effort of chasing efficiency, fuelled by tenacious curiosity.”

9:45pm End (Networking and beers downstairs)

Usual format is to gather from 7:30pm and commence the talks at 8:00pm. Talks are 20-25 mins with breaks in between of 15-20mins for networking and beer.

*Before the second session there is an opportunity for any short announcements so please let us know on the night if you would like a slot or 1-2mins.
